On November 3rd, 1969 The Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins visited Seoul, South Korea as part of a 38 day world tour visiting 29 cities in 24 countries that came to be known as the Giant Leap Tour. This medal featuring wording in Korean/English was made In South Korea to mark this historic event and although we do not know for sure if they were produced to be presented to only the astronauts in a ceremony during their stay it is safe to say this is truly a rare medal and presenting medals to anyone other than the astronauts to me would minimize the achievement itself. I was able to only find one other from South Korea which was purported to of come directly from the Armstrong family itself so it may be possible that only the astronauts and their wives received the medals although there were NASA officials as well as State Department officials traveling on the tour as well. The one South Korea medal from the Armstrong family did not have the ribbon as well as the original box as this one does. For anyone with an interest in space exploration there is not a more indelible image than that of Neil Armstrong taking that first step on the moon for which this medal commemorates that moment in history.
